Once your provisional driving licence expires, you are no longer allowed to drive, even with a supervisor.
You also cannot apply for a new provisional licence unless you wait for three years.
This 3-year waiting period starts from the expiry date of your last provisional licence.
Only after this period can you start again with an M18 (with a supervisor).
Fortunately, there are two emergency options for those who want to resume sooner:
Emergency Option 1: Provisional Licence M12
- You must take at least 6 hours of practical driving lessons at a recognised driving school.
- You will receive a certificate of 6 hours of instruction.
- With this certificate and your expired licence, you can apply for a provisional licence M12 at your local municipality.
Features of the M12:
- Valid for 12 months.
- You may drive with a supervisor.
- The supervisor must have completed the mandatory guidance course.
- No 5-month waiting period to take the practical exam.
Emergency Option 2: Internship certificate (Stageattest)
- Return your expired provisional licence to your municipality.
- You will receive a stage certificate – this is not a new provisional licence, so you are not allowed to drive on your own.
- With this certificate, you can only drive with a recognised driving school and take the practical exam through the school.
Requirements:
- You must complete at least 6 hours of instruction at a recognised driving school before your exam.
- The exam must be taken in a driving school vehicle accompanied by an instructor.
